1. Interview several web designers. Rates can vary widely. Be
very specific about your "vision" of your finished site. If
necessary, hire a web consultant. You may have to spend $500, but this
consultation could save you thousands!
2. Stay away from virtual domains! It is not expensive to own your own,
specific, domain name. For example: www.someoneelsesbusiness.com/your
business versus www.yourbusiness.com. Make it easy for your customers to
find you!
3. Maximize the value of your money spent on hosting. Use a national web
hosting service that give you at least 80mb on their server. When you want to
enhance or enlarge your site, you'll be glad that you did.
4. Advertise your web site on everything that you print. This includes
newspaper ads, business cards, stationary, and brochures. Don't forget about
that ad in the Yellow Pages!! Make your URL readily available to all potential
customers.
5. Carefully evaluate costs of search engine positioning and banner ads. As
more search engines begin to charge for top positions, your own advertising
efforts are of primary importance. Many banners have proven to be annoying to
consumers; click-thru rates have dropped dramatically.
6. Gather customer/visitor E-mail addresses by offering a premium. Perhaps a
coupon offering a discount for web visitors of a "free" item with web
purchases.
7. Utilize directed E-mail whenever possible and with your customers'
permission. Directed E-mail can save hundreds of dollars and be more effective
than "junk mail."
8. Customized auto-responders and form confirmation pages capture your
customers' attention. Use them to reiterate the special and unique services
that you offer.
9. Take the time to explore the uses of enhanced multi-media for your site.
Audio, video, and slide shows have the power to make your visitor's stay at
your site more exciting, thereby improving your chance to make the visitor a
customer. These enhancements can be had for a very reasonable cost.
10. REMEMBER: Well-designed and maintained web sites have the lowest
cost per view of any advertising media in history!
